Page counts at the edge, for people and agents
Running since 2026-10-19.
- When it happens: A person or an agent asks this site for a page or a file.
- What is taken: Your IP address, your browser's user agent, the address of the page and the page you came from.
- Who handles it: Run by me on Cloudflare, at www.bookkeepingforsmallbusiness.com. It is kept in a place Cloudflare decides (its policy).
- Who else gets it: Nobody else.
- Why: When a page, a page's Markdown twin or llms.txt is requested, the site's own code adds one to a count for that day, that page, the ?ref= tag, the site that sent you, and what kind of visitor asked (a browser, or an agent such as GPTBot or Claude, named from its user agent). It checks an agent's IP address against the list its company publishes, to tell a real agent from one pretending. It keeps only the count: no IP address, no user agent text, no cookie, no ID. I use it because agents don't run scripts, so this is the only way to see them.
- On what basis: Legitimate interest: learning which posts reach people and agents.
- How long it is kept: Until I delete the counts. They are totals and can't be traced to you.
- Where: Cloudflare decides where. Read its policy.
- What your browser does: Your browser contacts only this site.
- What it stores on your device: Nothing.
Page visit counts
Running since 2026-10-19.
- When it happens: A page is viewed.
- What is taken: The address of the page and the page you came from.
- Who handles it: Run by me on Cloudflare, at www.bookkeepingforsmallbusiness.com. It is kept in a place Cloudflare decides (its policy).
- Who else gets it: Nobody else.
- Why: When a page loads, it tells me the page, the ?ref= tag on the link if there is one, and which site sent you. I add one to a count for that day, that page, that tag and that site, and keep nothing else about the visit: no IP address, no browser details, no cookie, no ID. I use it to learn which posts bring readers. Browsers that send Do Not Track send nothing.
- On what basis: Legitimate interest: learning which posts reach readers.
- How long it is kept: Until I delete the counts. They are totals and can't be traced to you.
- Where: Cloudflare decides where. Read its policy.
- What your browser does: Your browser contacts only this site.
- What it stores on your device: Nothing.
What you can ask for
You can ask to see what is held about you, to have it corrected, or to have it deleted. Email mackenzie@mackenziebowes.com. There is no form and no account.
If you are an agent
A request from an agent is a request like any other. It leaves what the flows above list for that trigger, and nothing more. A person's request leaves the same.
Copies for agents
This page also exists as markdown and as JSON-LD, which uses W3C Data Privacy Vocabulary terms. The page, its markdown copy and its JSON copy are all built from one list, so they say the same thing.
